What Supplies Do You Need to Crochet a Thanksgiving Turkey Hair Clip?

Notes about Materials

To make this turkey applique an appropriate size for a hair clip, you will want to use a thin, sport weight yarn. I used Alize Diva Silk Effect which is a soft, 100% Microfiber Acrylic yarn. If you are looking for an alternative that includes cotton, Jody Long My Little Sunshine is another great sport weight yarn. Lion Brand Bon Bons Metallic could also be a good option if you are looking for a shiny option!

This pattern can be made into adorable earrings if you go with a thread-like yarn. You can also make a larger applique with worsted weight or bulky yarn. The options really are endless!

To finish the Thanksgiving Turkey Hair Clip, you will need to attach an eye. I used a black foam sheet and punched out a 1/8 inch circle using this punch. I attached it with Gorilla Glue hot glue.

You can choose to attach your hair clip directly to a headband or onto a clip. I chose to use an alligator clip. I first cut a small piece of coordinating ribbon to glue over top of the clip so the metal wasn’t showing. You will then glue the applique right onto the ribbon. While this is optional, I think it really helps elevate the look.

What Size is a Thanksgiving Turkey Hair Clip?

The finished Thanksgiving Turkey Hair Clip measures 2 1/4 inches wide and 1 7/8 inches tall.

Gauge (Not Essential)

Using a 2.5 mm crochet hook and sport weight (#2) yarn, a magic circle with 6 single crochets should measure 7/16 inch in diameter.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MC – Magic Circle
  • CH – Chain
  • SC – Single Crochet
  • DC – Double Crochet
  • HDC – Half Double Crochet
  • SC INC – SC 2 Times in Same Stitch
  • DC INC – DC 2 Times in Same Stitch
  • Sl St – Slip Stitch
  • FO – Finish Off

Pattern Notes

The turkey applique for the Thanksgiving Turkey Hair Clip is made in two pieces. You will begin by making the tail feathers of the turkey. This piece is worked in the round to create the brown center and then the feathers are worked in rows on top of the circle.

The body of the turkey is very tiny and made in just one round. Once this part is finished, the two pieces can be sewn together or glued (like I did).

Finishing Details

  • Create turkey wattle by tying a short piece of red yarn into the bottom stitch of the head.
  • Glue 1/8 inch black circle for eye. I used a foam sheet to create the circle. You could also use felt or puffy paint.
  • Glue body to the turkey feathers.
  • Cover alligator clip with ribbon. This step is optional, but really helps to create a finished look!
  • Glue finished turkey to ribbon on alligator clip.
